Lincoln Wild Kings are harvested by environmentally friendly fishing practices, enjoying the lowest bycatch level of any prawn fishery worldwide.
Lincoln Wild Kings received the highest assessment approval against the guidelines for the ecologically sustainable management of fisheries; under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
Lincoln Wild Kings are harvested very differently to any other prawn fishery in the world. The fleet conduct a survey of the fishing grounds prior to each fishing trip, and therefore know exactly where the Lincoln Wild Kings will be before they leave the wharf. This is called ‘smart’ fishing. The prawns are only taken if they have reached an optimum size. If they are not large enough, the fleet stays at the wharf and waits for mother nature to do her thing.
Once the fishing has started, a Committee At Sea consisting of 8 skippers and 1 Coordinator At Sea can close areas to fishing if the Lincoln Wild Kings are too small. This way the whole fleet can be moved away from areas of small prawns, allowing the Lincoln Wild Kings to mature. Like agricultural farming, if the crop is right we take it; if the crop is not ready, we leave it alone.
Harvesting of Lincoln Wild Kings occurs for about 55 nights each year in only 6 months of the year. Harvesting does not occur in January or February of each year to allow the prawns to spawn.
